Visiting Malaysia: visa rules, when to go, what to book
Malaysia is one of the easiest countries in Asia to visit — most travellers need no visa, English is widely spoken, halal food is everywhere, and the highlands are cool when the coast is hot. Here is what to sort out before you come, from an agency based an hour from Kuala Lumpur.
Do you need a visa?
Citizens of most countries can enter Malaysia visa-free for tourism, typically for 14, 30 or 90 days depending on nationality. This includes the UK, EU countries, the USA, Australia, the Gulf states, most of ASEAN, and many others. A smaller number of nationalities need a visa or an eVisa in advance.

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Almost every foreign visitor must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. It is free, takes a few minutes, and is checked at immigration. Fill it in before you fly, not in the queue. Citizens of Singapore and a few other categories are exempt.
When to come
- West coast (Langkawi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor): good year-round; driest December to February; short heavy showers April to May and September to October.
- East coast (Kuantan, Terengganu, the Perhentian islands): best March to October. The monsoon from November to February brings rough seas and closes many island resorts.
- Highlands (Cameron Highlands, Genting): cool 15–25 °C all year — the escape when the coast is hot.
- Avoid Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and the December school holidays if you want quiet resorts; expect them to be full and pricier.

Practical notes
- Currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities; carry some cash for markets and small towns.
- Halal food is the default. Vegetarian options are easy to find in Indian and Chinese restaurants.
- Dress modestly at mosques and in rural areas; beachwear is fine at resorts.
- Grab (ride-hailing) works well in cities. For islands and highlands, package transport is far easier than driving.
